The streets of the downtown and Kerr Village will be filled with holiday cheer as Oakville celebrates this year's Parade theme All I Want for Christmas. The parade is a special treat for many parents and grandparents who take kids, bundled up, to perch along the streets and await the arrival of St. Nick. They not only soak in some Christmas magic, but relive when they were there themselves -- as eager children, believers in the jolly old elf and his world of wonders, wide-eyed and laden with their own lengthy wish list. Tomorrow's event gets underway at 9 a.m. with a Christmas tree formation fly-by of Santa's airplanes over downtown Oakville and Kerr Street. The parade will delight the young and young-at- heart alike as it meanders its way along Lakeshore Road, then north on Kerr Street with lively bands and beautiful floats depicting the Christmas wishes of float creators. As always, there will be local high schools, whose students cheerfully compete for the title of best school float. Mrs. Claus hosts the winner of the annual Parade kids' colouring contest as she, as Grand Marshal of the parade, kicks off the fun. Local businesses, agencies, government, services and groups sponsor amazing floats and performers bring the Parade to life. Volunteers by the dozen help make it all happen. No doubt the fortunate people in Oakville, who find themselves with their family curbside for the celebration, will take their lead from three local groups to assist their less fortunate neighbours this season, another wonderful holiday tradition. The Oakville Professional Firefighters firmly believe every child deserves at least one special gift and so once again this year a crew will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade-goers. Bring along your unwrapped gift with you on parade day. Gifts for older children are especially needed. We remind those bringing gifts to not forget children over the age of 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the firefighters will have trucks starting downtown at about 8:30 a.m. just before the official start of the parade and volunteers to accept donations. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood are celebrating their 18th year of selling noses for charity at the Parade. What started as a group of fun-loving clowns enjoying the parade with their children has grown year after year and they hope to boost their total proceeds to well over $30,000 this year. This group sells their famous red noses "on parade day for $2, with all proceeds this year supporting Wellspring-Halton. Make sure when purchasing your nose, you get it from these clowns as they are the only group sanctioned by the parade for red nose sales. They are easily identified by their red sweatshirts or red aprons.
