Improving literacy skills by shopping You can help local adults build their literacy skills, and all you have to do is shop. On Thursday, Nov. 24, beginning at 5 p.m., Chapters at Dorval Crossing is hosting a FUNdraiser for the Oakville Literacy Council. With every purchase of in-store items during the event, Chapters will make a donation equal to 10 per cent of the purchase to support Oakville's volunteer-based adult literacy program. "You're going to drop into Chapters at least once to do some holiday shopping, so we're asking you to come by during our event," said Bernie Martenson, president of the Oakville Literacy Council. "You just buy what you normally would, and our literacy students benefit." The Oakville Literacy Council is a charitable organization that offers free, personalized tutoring in reading, writing and basic math for people who want to improve their literacy skills for employment, education and daily living. To contribute to the fundraiser, shoppers should register with Oakville Literacy volunteers upon arrival, which also enters them into the door prize draw.
