Lighting up Christmas Continued from page 1 7 · Friday, November 18, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com As always, there will be local high schools, whose students cheerfully compete for the title of best school float. You'll hear the parade, too, as it is full of bands and volunteers by the dozen will help make it all happen. It's a good opportunity to spread holiday cheer as the Oakville Professional Fire Fighters -- believing that every child deserves at least one special gift -- will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade-goers. Bring an unwrapped gift with you on parade day and donate. Gifts for older children are especially needed, particularly for those youths over age 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the firefighters will have trucks starting downtown at about 8:30 a.m. just before the official start of the parade and volunteers will be accepting donations. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood is celebrating its 18th year of selling red noses for charity at the parade. All proceeds will support Wellspring-Halton. These three groups are the only ones authorized to take collections during the parade. Santa's arrival at the parade's end will signal the start of the holiday season in Oakville. The after-parade celebration will continue as Encore Cinemas and RetroFestive.ca present three exclusive screenings of the Christmas movie classic, A Christmas Story. Join in at Encore Oakville Mews Cinemas after the Santa Claus Parade at either 11:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m. or 4 p.m. In lieu of admission, theatre-goers are asked to bring a donation to support the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre's food drive. Items being accepted include cash donations, non-perishable food items and grocery store gift cards. The parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds, go west along Lakeshore to Kerr Street, then head north on Kerr and end at Stewart Street.
