In the fall of 2006, the YMCA of Oakville was asked by the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington's Career Development and Learning Centre to host three single parents between the ages of 16 and 30 to explore the child care profession. This is a paid work placement, and the idea is for the mentors to offer their experience and provide help and support for a person in transition and/or developing their career options. When you meet Jeanna LeBlanc, you are quickly caught by her quiet and caring manner and easy smile you would not suspect the challenges that this young woman has faced. She became a teen mother over two years ago and now has a two-year-old son and a 10month-old daughter. Forced to drop out of high school, Jeanna was not sure what her next steps in life would be and then heard about the Y's child care internship program from a friend. The Early Bird Gets The Worm As the winter temperatures continue to creep into our early spring days, gardeners anxiously wait to start digging. When it's still too early to dig outside, starting seeds indoor is a rewarding and inexpensive activity for gardeners of all ages. All you need to get started is a container, growing mix potting soil, and a bright window or grow light. Homegrown vegetables and herbs always taste better. Even if you don't have room outside for an extensive garden, a decorative pot can grow your own cherry tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and culinary herbs. Flowers seeds grow well in pots on the smallest balcony or porch. Try planting seeds with your kids on a rainy spring day. Watch their eyes light up when their peas, beans, corn, or even sunflowers sprout out of the soil in days. A great birthday party activity, plant seeds with kids choosing larger size seeds so they are easier to handle. Get back to the basics and seed your way to the garden of your dreams. www.terragreenhouses.com 905-332-3222 Burlington Waterdown 905-689-1999 905-876-4000 Milton 905-832-6955 Vaughan 7 DAYS A WEEK! "When I was younger, I always wanted to work in daycare, and after I had my own kids, I thought it would be a great chance to try it." Melissa Porter, another young mother of an eightmonth-old girl also joined the internship program after she read about it in the newspaper. "I was thinking about what to do next, and the program sounded interesting," said Melissa. Lisa Reid is a third intern in the Y's program. Her supervisor, Anne Marie Schiraldi commented: "Lisa has been a pleasant addition to our team. She is eager to participate and her customer service skills have been impressive from her first day when she personally introduced herself to every parent." Jeanna has enjoyed the program and would like to go back and finish her high school diploma and then get her certificate as an Early Childhood Educator. "I like doing the creative work with the kids and reading to them at storytime. There is one little girl that I have always liked to play with." Melissa has set a goal to finish high school and then go to Sheridan to pursue a career as a youth worker. "It has been great to get some actual work experience and I have really enjoyed many of the kids." Three young mothers with goals and a future thanks to a little help from the Y.
