35 · Friday, December 16, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Pine Grove will shop for instruments thanks to grant Students at Oakville's Pine Grove Public School are in a tuneful mood after receiving a grant this term from XM Satellite Radio Canada. The school received a $3,100 bursary as part of a partnership between the S'Cool Life Fund and the XM Instrument Fund, which will allow it to purchase more musical instruments for its primary students. Pine Grove was chosen because the school is currently overcrowded with 740 kids, said Lesley Jesseau, school council communications co-ordinator. Primary students attend music class in the foyer, as there are no available classrooms. "We have eight classes of Grade 1s and seven classes of Grade 2s and they're having to share instruments, so we were awarded a grant to purchase instruments so that every kid (gets) to interact and be a full part of the music program," said Jesseau. The grant is important, she said, because the school doesn't receive board money when it comes to purchasing instruments. Last year, Pine Grove received a grant from the Halton Learning Foundation to buy guitars for older students. "You just sort of have to deal with what you got and for Pine Grove, we've gone from having only Grades 16, to getting Grade 7 and 8, so that required a lot of funding to get instruments they could use and then that sort of made our primary students suffer," said Jesseau. "It's really been a big push to try and make sure everyone at Pine Grove has equal access to instruments. We've had to do a lot of fundraising and apply for grants like this in order to do it." As part of its plan to support emerging Canadian talent, XM Canada has dedicated $100,000 through the instrument fund to encourage artistic growth in up and coming Canadian musicians. The school plans on using the funds to buy more xylophones and "other things students use," Jesseau said. Pine Grove is a Grade 18 French-immersion school within the Halton District School Board. It is located at 529 Fourth Line.
