N ov. 11 is a day when Canada remembers all of those who have fought, and are still fighting, for our country. Remembrance Day is an important pause in our busy lives to remind us of Canada's courageous efforts and achievements, as well as its struggles. Although the First and Second World Wars and the more recent war in Afghanistan are the most prominent in our minds, we must not forget those who fought in the Korean War, Gulf War I, Bosnia, Somalia, Gulf War II and now in Libya. We can also be proud of the upstanding role Canada's military has played in peacekeeping and rebuilding after war. Over almost 100 years, we have been fighting and working for peace, but also changing as a nation, developing the unique society we have come to know and be proud of. Our society has grown over the years, as advancements in equality ­ especially the contributions of Canadian women at home and in the military ­ have evolved. The need for women working in factories, on farms and throughout their communities during the First World War played a large role in the development of women's rights. Today, we have women on the front line in Afghanistan, working in the navy, as pilots and as military officials. Yet, women started out as nurses in the military in 1885. More than 45,000 women were recruited in 1941 to serve in the important to acknowledge and appreciate our Canadian roots, as our history is an important aspect of being a part of this country. Understanding Canada's past and being educated about important events is a crucial part of moving forward as an individual, as a community and as a country. Having a knowledge of Canadian history helps us to make appropriate social, economical and political decisions. This aspect of Canadian history is important because of the huge impact it has had on the way we live our lives today. We cannot forget the people who have lost loved ones and those who are faced with a military for jobs other than physical or mental injury as a result of their time nursing. All roles in the military then opened up to women in 1989, and currently more than 15 per cent of the Canadian Forces are women. We must recognize everyone's contributions to the war effort, fighting for our country, and fighting for peace. Although Remembrance Day is one day a year, it is in combat. Almost everyone has had a relative, friend or neighbour who was/is involved with Canada's war efforts. A total of 10 members of my family have served in the Canadian military. It is important to understand the endeavours made by Canadians when listening to the stories of our grandfathers, uncles and aunts. We have Nov. 11 to keep us from losing our identity as a nation. As I have the honour of playing The Last Post t at Blakelock's Remembrance Day ceremony, just as my brother has, my father has, my mother has, and my uncles have, I will remember.
