23 · Friday, November 11, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com If you're wondering what to read next, let the library help you out Y ou've just finished a great book; you are glowing from the escapism and want to keep the enthusiasm going, but just can't think what to read next.... Asking friends and family for their ideas for next reads is good (albeit sometimes biased), but if you want some in-depth reviews and meaty recommendations, then let us help. Besides being able to borrow books and other materials from your local library, why not use the library staff and access to thousands of book reviews online to choose your next great reads? There are many ways Oakville Public Library can help you decide the next read for you or for another member of your family. Remember, our professional staff is always happy to give their own recommendations for great books for both adults and children. Our Children's Specialists at each branch are on hand, both in children's library programs and on the floor, to guide parents to the next step for your little ones, based on level of reading and interest. If you prefer to do your research online then simply log-in to your Oakville Public Library account -- you need your account number (found on the back of your card) and your pin number (generally the last four digits of your phone number). Even on the home page, you are greeted with the scrolling list of `Recently Reviewed' items and also the `Staff Picks'. These are a great starting point if you want to hear what other customers and staff have thought of recent books in various genres. As you y go g through g the catalogue, g , you y can get recommendations based on what types of f books you have read before and also get other reviewed items from users who have created a `List'. A list is a collection of titles related to a specific topic or idea of your choosing. For example, 10 Books My Daughter Loves Best and Movies That Changed My Life are lists you could create. A good list is a curated topic guide and not just a group of titles by an author, which is why they are so helpful to other users. Creating lists, tagging items and adding comments and reviews is what makes the catalogue such a rich resource for all of us. Another great source of reading recommendations is the `What Do I Read Next?' database. Not only can you search by the usual suspects such as author and genre, you can also select based on best seller, award winner, time period and even character. There is also an option for users to enter the name of a liked book and then based on selecting certain terms that were most important to your enjoyment of that book; the database helps you make a brilliant choice for your next read. Never be stuck wondering what to read again....let us help.
