JON BORGSTROM / OAKVILLE BEAVER MUSIC AND MORE: Master director Barbara Hodge and the Circle of Harmony women's chorus rehearse for an upcoming concert. A capella and guitar in harmony By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF With just one concert date on the calendar this year, Oakville's award-winning Circle of Harmony chorus wants to wow its audience. To help the women's a capella chorus do just that, the group has hired internationally-recognized, classical-guitarist Liona Boyd, also known as the First Lady of the Guitar. "We've been in Oakville since 1998 and we want to become more well known," said music director Barbara Hodge. "We said: how are we going to become more well known. So a couple of years ago we hired the Nylons. We loved it. It was so much fun." The group decided to continue hiring big name acts that would help attract larger audiences to the shows. This year, the group hired Boyd, who Hodge said would fit well with the chorus group. "We thought, Liona Boyd. She's famous, she's from around this area, she's Canadian," Hodge said. "We said, let's get her." The nearly 70-voice choir will have its own set and Boyd will play on her own. Circle of Harmony's En Route will also perform. En Route is a quartet of the best singers from Circle of Harmony, which includes Hodge as well as singers Kathy Withnell, Margaret Fielding and Carol Shields. Hodge added that a Circle of Harmony concert is more than just music, it's a show. "It's not just standing there and singing. We dance as well. It's the whole performance package. It takes quite a lot of work," she said. "It's about putting a performance on and making people feel something when we're singing. It's a visual and audio performance at the same time." The group performs music from a number of eras and a number of styles of music. Hodge said the concert will offer something for everyone. The group also competes at international choral contests. The concerts are at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for adults and $25 for seniors and children. There is also a Paradiso Theatre Package available, with a cost of $60 per adult or $50 each for seniors and children. For tickets visit www.oakvillecentre.ca.
