The OJHL West squad -- which features six Blades players and features the top players from the league's West Division -- opened the tournament Tuesday with a 4-1 win over the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. OJHL West then dropped a 6-2 decision to OJHL North yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. The Blades' Braedan Russell had a goal and an assist in the opener for OJHL West, while Oakville teammate Conor McGlynn added a goal. Blades netminder James Prigione made 18 saves in the win. Local residents Patrick Megannety and Nathaniel Domagala, both members of the rival Georgetown Raiders, drew assists against the NOJHL. Two more Blades -- Phil Hampton and Martin Kudla -- earned assists yesterday in OJHL West's loss to the OJHL North squad. The OJHL West was slated to face the Central Canada Hockey League's Yzerman Division last night to conclude the round-robin schedule. Eight teams (four from the OJHL, two from the CCHL and one each from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League and Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League) are competing in the tournament, which concludes today (Thursday). Rangers squads off to torrid start at Bell tournament Oakville Rangers teams competing at this week's hometown Richard Bell Memorial Tournament have lived up to their lofty regular-season standards so far. In fact, only three of 15 Rangers teams competing in the tournament had tasted defeat going into late afternoon and evening action yesterday (Wednesday). As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Oakville teams had combined to go 27-3-4 in their first 34 games of the tournament. That included an 11-1 showing by the minor atom age AAA, AA, AE and AE Rangers, all of whom lead their respective divisions in league play. The minor atom AAA Rangers defeated the Mississauga Senators 4-0, North York Rangers 8-0 and Barrie Colts 4-1 in their first three games; the atom AA Rangers downed the Mississauga Braves 5-2, Scarborough Young Bruins 9-1 and Streetsville Tigers 4-0; the atom A Rangers defeated the Burlington Bulldogs 7-0 and Applewood Coyotes 7-2 before falling 3-2 to the Grimsby Peach Kings; and the atom AE Rangers dumped the Orangeville Flyers 9-0, Hamilton Phantoms 13-3 and Whitby Wildcats 4-2. In minor peewee action, the AAA Rangers had a win and two ties through three games (beating the Markham Majors 3-0 and tying the Mississauga Senators 3-3 and Hamilton Reps 1-1); the AA Rangers were 3-0 after wins over the Toronto Eagles (7-0), Mississauga North Stars (3-2) and Georgetown Raiders (11-1); the peewee A Rangers were 1-1-1 (6-1 win over the Clarkson Hurricanes, 2-0 loss to the Innisfil Winterhawks and 2-2 tie with the Plymouth Stingrays); and the peewee AE Rangers were 3-0 following victories over the Whitby Wildcats (2-0), Port Credit Storm (8-0) and Barrie Colts (5-1). All the minor atom and peewee teams were scheduled to conclude their round-robin schedules yesterday, with semifinals and championship games slated for today (Thursday). The minor bantam AE Rangers the only other Oakville team to begin its tournament Tuesday -- carried a 3-0 record into their final round-robin game last night. Oakville beat the Burlington Bulldogs 2-0, Richmond Hill Stars 5-1 and Sarnia Jr. Sting 5-1 in its first three games. The minor bantam AE division will also play its semifinals and championship game today. Other minor bantam teams and the entire minor midget age grouping began their tournament yesterday. The minor bantam AAA Rangers dropped their first game (3-2 to the Waterloo Wolves), the minor bantam AA Rangers posted wins over the Cambridge Hawks (4-2) and Flamborough Sabres (6-0), the minor bantam A Rangers doubled up the Georgetown Raiders 4-2, the minor midget AA Rangers blanked the Burlington Eagles 6-0, the minor midget A Rangers downed Hasle Loeren 3-1, and the minor midget AE Rangers played to a 3-3 draw with the Orangeville Flyers. Round-robin play for those divisions continue today. Semifinals and championship games will be contested tomorrow (Friday). All finals will be played at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. No admission fees are charged for any games in the tournament.
