14 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,February 16, 2010 BIRTHS BUSINESS HIEC seeks career coaches for special events The Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) will host the first-ever Men as Career Coaches (MACC), to be held Thursday, March 4, at the Burlington Convention Centre and the sixth annual Women as Career Coaches (WACC), to be held on Thursday, March 25, at the Burlington Convention Centre with keynote speaker Jeanne Beker, the host of CTV's FashionTelevision. Young people need access to adult role models who are willing to share their career pathways, encourage positive self-esteem and promote the goals and dreams of youth. Both events provide an opportunity for community members to share career experiences, insights and journeys with young men and women, Grades 9-12, in an informal, interactive manner. At this time HIEC is recruiting Career Coaches and sponsors for both events. Sponsorship is becoming very important, due to the increasing costs of these important opportunities. These gender specific events will foster new levels of mentorship, as adult role models engage with youth to help them become informed about opportunities available in the world of work. Both events provide an opportunity for community members to share career experiences, insights and journeys with youth in an informal, interactive manner. The career coaching model encourages the entire community to play a vital role in reaching out to youth to provide them with the necessary information and resources to make informed career decisions, while building a culture of mentorship that will have lasting impact in Halton. Over the past five years, WACC has become an extremely popular event in Halton with attendance more than doubling since its inception. The impact these events have on student attendees is everlasting and powerful, as seen in the following quote from a past student attendee of Women as Career Coaches: "Women as Career Coaches changed my life and took me in a whole new direction. I met lots of women who were very encouraging and positive. Attending this event helped me to pursue my goals and achieve my dreams."
