Ian Troop was hired as the chief executive officer last week to oversee the $2.4-billion project, with venues spread in 17 municipalities across the region, stretching from St. Catharines to Barrie to Oshawa. As well, Troop will oversee construction of the $1 billion athletes' village in the West Donlands that will house 8,500 athletes, coaches and officials. Parts of the village will be turned into affordable housing afterwards. "I've always been thinking of ways to marry my passion for business and love of sports and this is a unique opportunity to improve our sports infrastructure and develop amateur sports in Canada," said Troop, who served on the National Hockey League Players' Association advisory board from 2008 until Oct. 2009. In accepting the $350,000-ayear position, Troop will step down as operating adviser to the Ontario Municipal Employees' Retirement System (OMERS) private equity, a $42-billion pension fund. Troop also chaired the committee for the Field of Dreams project at Georgetown District High School, a $2.1-million undertaking that is set to open in September with an artificial turf sports field and all-weather rubberized track. It's the first such facility within the Halton District School Board, which loaned the committee $1.5 million to offset construction costs.
