Celebrating Minor Sports Rep & House League Updates Georgetown and Acton IN THIS ISSUE SCOREBOARD February 2010 Ontario's longest-running peewee minor hockey tournament just keeps getting bigger and the Acton House League's annual showcase celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this month with two of its teams advancing to their respective division finals. And while the host clubs were shut out in those championship games, tournament co-chairs Russell and Cathy Lee were thrilled to report that this year's event received sparkling reviews from players and coaches, thanks in part to the dedication of the organization's volunteers. The 2010 edition was expanded to include 28 teams featuring about 400 players skating at the Acton and Georgetown Memorial arenas in Halton Hills. "It takes a small army of people volunteering many hours of their time over a three day period to make this tournament a success, for that the League and its Executive are truly grateful," said Acton House League president Ted Saelzer. In the 10-team Bill Waites Division, Acton's Nova Training downed Oakville, Orangeville and Otonabee to reach the final, with the Listowel Cyclones defeating Acton's RM Construction, Rallis Burger and Orangeville to clinch their spot. Listowel skated to a 4-0 triumph to take home the title. The six-team Select Division started things off Friday evening with MacMillan's Acton Chargers beating Wellington in the opener followed by wins over Creemore and Erin-Hillsburgh to book their berth in the championship matchup. The Oakville Eagles would provide the opposition, having blanked Glanbrook, Erin-Hillsburgh and Wellington along the way. 20 Pages GMHA house league squads tops at Grafton tourney Page 6 Defenceman Michael Turner of the Acton Chargers steers away a loose puck from the crease of goaltender Zack Ross during the opening game of the recent Acton House League/ Select Minor Hockey Tournament. The Chargers posted a victory over Wellington in the opener of the select division draw, and along with wins against Creemore and Hillsburgh, earned a spot in the final with the Oakville Eagles. But the Eagles proved to be too formidable, not allowing a single goal through four games to earn the select division title. But Oakville's pressure paid off with a pair of goals in the second period and three more in the third as Eagle goalie Nathan Gravell posted his fourth shutout of the tourney. The John Toebes Division involved 12 teams broken into two preliminary round pools, with two squads from Meadowvale defeating teams from Acton and Georgetown to eventually meet in the final.
