8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, February 25, 2010 Sign-up NOW for Town wants to buy M-SB lands By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Halton Hills Council gave Town staff the go-ahead Monday to negotiate with the Halton Board of Education for the purchase of 6.2 acres of McKenzie-Smith Bennett School property in Acton. The resolution was unanimously supported in camera at Monday's Halton Hills council meeting. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette said the Town intends to offer a "fair and reasonable" price for the land, and wants to purchase more than the 2.5 acres the school board planned to sell of the 15-acre school site. Bonnette said the Town wants to buy a larger parcel, "so this (future sell-off of land there by the board) doesn't come up again." "In essence we're trying to save the school board from itself, because if we lose the three soccer fields and ball diamond, there is no place else to replace them in the Town of Acton." He explained the Town is surrounded by greenbelt and can't expand its urban boundaries, for development or new parkland. "We hope the school board would be reasonable," said Bonnette. Last year, when the board announced its plans to sell land at the school Bonnette had said the Town didn't want to pay for the land because it already had bought it back in 1958 when the Town of Acton paid $5,800 for it when it ran the local school board. When asked why the town would pay for it now, he said, "5,000 people signed a petition to save it." He said they tried "to pull out all the stops" to halt the sale of the land, even going to the provincial government, but had no luck.
