By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Region promises sewage plant odours will be reduced The odours coming from the Halton Region sewage treatment plant on Mountainview Rd. should be "significantly reduced" when a new $6.5 million digester is installed next year. David Andrews, Director of Wastewater Services for Halton Region, said near the end of last year the Region noticed an increase in the number of complaints it received about odours from the plant. He said three or four people made multiple complaints at that time, and there has been another complaint in January, but none since then. Andrews said it depends on the year, but the maximum number of complaints usually received about odours from the Georgetown plant is 20 a year. Traditionally, he said, odour complaints come in the spring and fall when the air is still and there is temperature inversion conditions. Winter is not when the Region normally hears complaints about odours from the plant. After receiving the recent complaints staff at the plant weren't able to pin the odour down "to one single source," but noted a discharge of material into the plant that had a heavy rotten egg odour. Staff made modifications to the digester See SEWAGE, pg. 5 Cool runnings Local kids have had to wait a long time this winter to break out their toboggans, carpets and snowboards but some, like Kelly Emberlin, 10, of Georgetown, found it was worth the wait as she enjoyed winter's first big snowfall Tuesday at the Cedarvale Park toboggan run. Light snow is in the forecast for the next three days so area hills are likely to be busy. Photos by Ted Brown APPLE We handle all insurance work.
