Reeves led by example Inside d Continued from page 1 3 · Friday, January 6, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Reeves began volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross in 1985 and over the years served in numerous roles in the disaster management and transportation programs. He also served as president of the Oakville Branch Council from 2004-06. For several years, Reeves was a Red Cross disaster management instructor. In 2002, he championed the launch of the Personal Disaster Assistance program in Halton. It gives basic assistance to those impacted by a personal disaster, like a house fire, for up to 72 hours. Reeves also responded to several out-oftown emergency deployments, including the 2004 Peterborough floods and the 1998 Eastern Canada Ice Storm where he was an emergency shelter manager in Kingston, Ontario. Reeves once said while working in Kingston, many of the people he encountered were baffled he had come from Oakville to help. "Kim was a shining example of service above self," said Peter Zulauf, past president, Ontario Zone Council, Canadian Red Cross. "He led by example, not only through his contribution to the community, but by his encouragement of others to do the same. Our hearts go out to his family. He will be missed and his absence will be a loss to us all." In addition to his work in disaster management, Reeves supported the introduction of the RespectED program to Halton. Reeves was also an avid fundraiser and represented the Canadian Red Cross at many community events and local service clubs. For all his work, Reeves was awarded the Red Cross Distinguished Service Award in 2010. He was also awarded the Governor General's Golden Jubilee Medal for services. "It is impossible to capture the scope of Kim's contribution to the Red Cross in a few words," said John Robertson, past president, Oakville Branch Council. "He will be missed both as a friend and as a fellow volunteer." Reeves is survived by his wife of 42 years, Penny, his sister Bambi, his children Sarah Sims (Rob), Amanda (Craig Squires), and Alex (Colleen Dunn). His grandchildren, Graydon, Elliot, Amelia, Keira, Campbell, Molly, and Henry miss their grandfather's fishing stories. A memorial service is scheduled for today (Jan. 6) at 11 a.m., at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds St. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the West Parry Sound Health Centre or the Oakville Hospital Foundation.
