"It's important to practise the short game. I often see people drop a bucket of balls on the driving range and spend half-an-hour driving balls, then spend a mere five or 10 minutes putting. That's it; they figure they're refreshed. Instead, the times should be reversed, half an hour or more putting and just a few minutes with a driver." To restore your short game, practise chipping with your pitching wedge a few yards from the edge of a green. Focus on controlling your shot, reacquiring your sense of distance and terrain. When you have reacquired these skills, move farther away. Go to a distance of 30 yards from the green and practise long chipping. Move progressively away until you're ready to use the driver. Soon enough, you'll find your swing and be confident on the course once again. The form you perfected last year will slowly re-emerge. Some of your game-- the feel-- goes over the winter. It's almost inevitable. But don't wait until you hit the links to begin finding it again. Now is the time to get yourself and your swing in shape for the coming season.
