Dry winter could result in low water tables, says CVC Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is warning of the potential for low water tables this summer due to the dry winter. The CVC is taking the occasion of the World Water Day on March 22, as declared by the United Nations, to remind residents of water quality and quantity issues along the Credit River. This year's theme is `Clean Water for a Healthy World'. "Here in the Credit River Watershed, we've had a relatively dry fall and winter," said Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) Director of Water Resources John Kinkead. "If this trend continues, we're going to see lower groundwater tables and reduced flow levels in area streams. Water conservation efforts will be ever more important this year." CVC is offering easy tips to keep your lawn, garden or other property healthy and beautiful, while curbing pollution and reducing water use. · Look for drought-tolerant grasses and plants that don't require fertilizer and will keep your garden looking beautiful, even through dry spells. · Don't mow too low. By raising the blade on your mower a bit, the grass's roots will grow stronger, and the grass won't dry out as quickly. And for a natural fertilizer, leave your grass clippings on the lawn. · Use a soaker hose rather than a sprinkler, and consider investing in a rain barrel-- you'll have water when you need it, even during dry spells. · Ensure any household chemicals are properly stored or disposed of so they don't contaminate ground or surface waters. · If you live in a rural area and you have a private well, ensure that it is properly capped and protected from surface runoff.
