4 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,March 23, 2010 Players unknowingly drove past crash scene Continued from pg. 1 The boys' coach, Darren Coulter, sensed something was wrong when the already short-staffed team had a couple of no-shows for its 9 a.m. game on the second day of the tournament. "Some of the boys showed up late and said it was because of an accident on the highway. One of them mentioned that they'd seen hockey bags on the road as they drove by," Coulter recalled. "Both kids were really having a great time at the tournament and it's not like them to be late or to ever miss a game. I got a phone call while the kids were on the ice for the warmup from Chris's mom that Chris was fine but Jeff was hurt. I was really shaken." The team played two games in St. Catharines that day before returning home for the evening. When Coulter saw the accident scene on television and heard reports of Jeffrey's condition, he contacted the rest of the players and their parents and asked if they should continue playing in the tournament. "It was very emotional because these kids are good teammates and a lot of them go to school with Chris and Jeff," Coulter said. "Everyone was asking if there was something they could do to help and at that point there was nothing, really, that we could do. Unanimously, the boys said they wanted to play on and win the whole thing for their teammates." Sporting red ribbons as a tribute to their absent teammates, the team skated to a 4-3 shootout win against the Burlington Senators on Thursday to clinch the championship. The coach added that the team has qualified for Sunday's gold medal game in the bantam white division of the GMHA's Weekend of Champs beginning at 3:15 p.m. at the Alcott Arena. A get-well banner will be circulated for well-wishers to pass on words of encouragement for Jeffrey. Coulter described Boorman as a selfless player who volunteered to switch from the forward position to defence when the team was short on rearguards. · See game report page 16 Perennials pay off The Canadian Cancer Society recently received a $10,503 donation as Sheridan Nurseries presented a cheque for the funds raised by their Perennials for the Cure Program, in which $3 from the sale of each plant from a number of perennials was donated to the Cancer Society.
