Everyone is invited to help celebrate as Acton residents Emil and Tess Nicolas accept the keys to their new soy home from Habitat for Humanity Halton Sunday. The dedication ceremony will take place at the home located at 238 Peel St. from 1 to 3 p.m. and those who attend will be able to share some light refreshments and tour the soy house. "This is a great initiative. Key components of the house were built by Quality Engineered Homes, with considerable work done by some of Habitat Halton's top volunteers including sweat equity hours contributed by the Nicolas family," said Anne Swarbrick, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Halton. She added, "many of the building materials consist of soy products, which are truly environmentally sustainable." The soy house was originally displayed at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, after being built by Quality Engineered Homes at their factory in Kenilworth, demonstrating soy building products grown by members of the Grain Farmers of Ontario. After the fair, it was disassembled, shipped and reassembled in Acton for Habitat for Humanity Halton. Soy products used in the home are no-VOC paints and varnishes, bathroom fixtures, adhesives and insulation in place of petroleum oils.
