Cost, construction concerns nix JET balcony proposal By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Significant concerns with adding a balcony to the John Elliott Theatre has nixed that option in the upcoming renovations of the Cultural Centre. Halton Hills council agreed at its recent meeting that there are too many problems associated with construction of a 51-seat balcony. The possibility of this feature was brought up during user groups consultation meetings early in the concept stage of the renovation plans. Issues include: · Obstruction of sightlines and poor acoustics for 100 to 140 seats on the lower level-- almost half of the current 267-seat facility. · All of the roof areas in the theatre would have to be raised · The cost would soar from a preliminary estimate of $240,000 to a new estimate between $1.34 and $1.99 million. · Globe Productions and Georgetown Little Theatre both reported to the Town that sales of their shows don't warrant more seats. The only shows that consistently sell out in the JET are the June dance recitals. "I've had misgivings on this from the beginning," said Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal, who said many performers have expressed enthusiasm for the intimate acoustical theatre. "Even though Jamie (Smith, general manager) has been bringing exceptional talent to our community, it's never sold out," she said. "To me, the big issue is not adding more seats it's selling the ones that are there right now." Chamberlain Architects needed an answer this month on the balcony before going any further on their designs for the renovation/expansion on the Cultural Centre & Georgetown Library. #Limited time lease offers based on new 2010 Honda models.
