h k you Board starts boundary Thank review in northwest OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Facing an accommodation squeeze at its northwest Oakville schools, the Halton District School Board has started a boundary review process that it hopes will lead to some relief. The board's projected enrolment identifies accommodation pressures at Palermo and Forest Trail public schools. Trustees recently approved a boundary review of the area. "The intent of the boundary review process is to look at what the options are. How do we address the accommodation pressures in that area, in northwest Oakville, for elementary schools?" said planning manager Domenico Renzella. This is taking place after the board made changes to the Ward 4 school boundaries in 2009, which became a source of contention in the community. This was also done in order to relieve accommodation pressures. Now, the boundaries may be shaken up again. An option out of the boundary review is to move students. However, if school boundaries are changed, the review will need to be completed by March. "With respect to the boundary review, that's the timeline we're looking at if we're going to implement anything for September 2012. We will need to have some kind of decision made by the end of March," Renzella said. If the board chooses not to change boundaries, then the March deadline will not be the endall for the review. Oakville is not the only municipality with such problems. The board has also initiated a boundary review in northeast Burlington and parts of Milton. Forest Trail is over-capacity with 15 portables on site, while Palermo currently has nine portables, but would need more to accommodate its fast population growth, with the current boundaries. The school board procedures are to have no more than 12 portables on a school site and to not have more students at a school than its capacity. So the school board hopes to identify a solution with the current boundary review. "In some cases, if you look at the report, the school cannot accommodate any more kids because of capacity issues, in terms of the number of portables," Renzella said. "And is that (large population) a good environment for our students to learn in? We have to address this somehow, so how do we do it?" 11 · Wednesday, January 11, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER FOR THE SUPPORT: Dianne Craig, Ford Motor Co. of Canada's new president and CEO, is thanked by Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, president and CEO of Sheridan College, for Ford's support of Sheridan's Skills Training Centre on Iroquois Shore Road.
