After a long discussion at its previous meeting, the HDSB decided on its new trustee distribution and determination. The board voted to reduce Halton Hills to one trustee from two while increasing Milton to two from its previous one as a result of new Ontario government regulations. The decision will also shuffle the Burlington trustee boundaries. Wards 3 and 4 Halton Hills Trustee Gillian Tuck Kutarna argued intently to retain two trustees in Halton Hills. She said with Halton Hills being 278 sq. km., one trustee here would have to cover an area nearly 18 times greater than the trustee with the smallest ward in Oakville. She added there are seven trustees in Burlington and Oakville who will cover 50 sq. km or less. She also said, with 7,129 students in Halton Hills there are 2.4 times more students here compared to the smallest ward in Oakville. It takes at least an hour in rush hour to get to the board office in Burlington from Halton Hills, while everyone else will be within less than a half-hour from the office, said Tuck Kutarna. And she said, the Halton Hills trustee would have by far the greatest number of schools of any trustee area.
