The Elder Services Advisory Committee (ESAC) will be holding upcoming focus groups in Acton and Georgetown to collect information for a research project the committee is undertaking on "age-friendly communities". "An age-friendly city encourages active ageing by optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age," explains a recent presentation made to regional council's health committee by ESAC. This year Earth Day's theme is "Celebrating Our Biodiversity," and the Town will be celebrating, as it has in the past, at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre on Trafalgar Rd. and new this year, at Georgetown Market Place and Devereaux House. As in previous years, Earth Day will be celebrated at Robert C. Austin Operations Centre on Saturday, April 24 from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. This will mark the 10th anniversary of the Town offering trees for sale to residents at a nominal cost. To date, the Town has sold approximately 9,000 trees. The trees create important environmental benefits by providing wildlife habitat, absorbing carbon dioxide emissions, improving water and air quality, and beautifying the local environment. Donations to local food banks will be gratefully accepted at the Centre. In addition to the annual tree sale, visitors to the Robert C Austin Operations Centre will be able to drop off their household hazardous and electronic waste, pick up free compost and mulch, and even enjoy a barbecue. New this year, various pieces of Public Works equipment and vehicles will be on display. The Town will also host interactive and fun activities for children with chances to win prizes.
