Blitz in Acton deters Erin truckers By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer The mayor called on Halton Police and the Ministry of Transportation to help him send a strong message to an Erin pit operator Monday. For the past four weeks, up to 150 loaded dump trucks a day have been coming from an Erin site on Wellington Rd. 125, just north of Acton, and passing through the community, including residential side streets, igniting safety concerns among residents. "This has been an aggravation to myself, the Acton councillors as well as many people in Acton," said the mayor. He said the designated truck route for this pit is Wellington Rd. 124 to Trafalgar Rd., with destinations in Brampton and Milton-- not through Acton. The mayor added, besides safety concerns, there is an issue with the wear and tear on the municipal roads from the loaded trucks. Town staff has been out to the site at least four times in past month, and fielded a flurry of telephone calls. Finally on Friday, the mayor informed the pit owner that there would be consequences if it didn't stop. "And today (Monday) there were consequences," the mayor stated during Monday's council meeting. With Halton Regional Police and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) truck enforcement unit, a truck enforcement blitz was set up within Acton. "I guess the word got out that the blitz was in town, because the truck traffic was significantly reduced," Bonnette said, stating only 33 trucks came through the community on Monday, compared to counts of up to 150 trucks a day in the previous weeks. "The work seemed to quit once the word got out the police and MTO enforcement unit was there." Bonnette said more truck enforcement days will be held in the future to keep the community's roads safe, but "I'm not going to say when because we don't want to ruin any good surprises, do we?"
