16 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,May 11, 2010 GET FIT & GET HEALTHY Local residents walk and ride in the fight against cancer Acton resident Lisa Gareau Booth wants to make a difference, and she needs your help. Gareau will partake in the eighth annual Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women's Cancers. All funds raised will benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Hospital. During the weekend, Sept. 11 to 12, thousands of people will join together in Toronto to walk 60 kilometres for the fight to end breast cancer and gynecologic cancers. Gareau lost a family friend to uterine cancer, and walks "for those who are fighting and who have fought and lost their battle." "Each of us has in some way been affected by cancer either directly or indirectly. Battling cancer is hard, walking is not-- that's why I am doing something bold to help end women's cancers," says Gareau on her page at the Weekend to End Women's Cancers's website. Gareau has committed to walking 60 km for a minimum $2,000 or 32 km for a minimum of $1250. To aid that effort, she will be holding a fundraising sale including kids' games and a barbecue at 82 Danville Drive, Acton, on Saturday, May 29 beginning at 8 a.m. and running until 1 p.m. If you wish to donate to her campaign, visit www.endcancer.ca and click "donate" and type in Gareau's name. The riders will travel 200 km or 200 miles from Toronto the Niagara Falls on June 12 to 13. Graham's cause for rallying is a close one. Her adoptive mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. After a single mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer returned in 2004 in her lymph nodes, lungs and remaining breast. She died of liver failure in October 2005. Graham has set a goal of $3,000 for the cause. You can donate by visiting www.conquercancer.ca or call 877-699BIKE (2453), and type in Graham's name. "Thank you in advance for your donations. I've set my goal high but know that I can reach it with your help. If 50 people donate $50, I'll reach the minimum goal of $2,500 in no time! Every little bit counts!," said Graham. As of May 7, she was more than halfway to her goal. *** Sisters Christine Otto and Susan Garland (a breast cancer survivor) with Christine's daughter Caroline Otto are also participating in the Weekend to End Women's Cancers in September.
