SPORTS & LEISURE High school report 29 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, May 27, 2010 Renton, Driedger claim three events at GHAC Several track & field athletes from Halton Hills earned medals and qualifications for the next meet at last week's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference Championships in Burlington and Hamilton. Christ the King's Tyler Renton is looking to improve on last year's bronze medal showing in the javelin at the provincial championships and was in fine form at GHAC, sweeping the three junior boys' throwing events with winning distances that blew away the senior boys' field. Renton placed first in the shot put (16.42m), discus (43.71m) and javelin (59.13m). Georgetown District High School's Emily Driedger was also a triple GHAC gold medalist, winning the senior girls' 800m race by a whopping seven seconds over the runner-up in a time of 2:19.45. The Grade 12 student also finished first in both the 1,500m (4:46.96) and 3,000m (10:29.18) by wide margins. The top five finishers at the GHAC meet qualified for the South Region provincial qualifier, to be held today (Thursday) and Friday in St. Catharines. This year's OFSAA championships will be held June 3-5 in London. The 6-2-1 Bearcats had the highest scoring team in the AA loop this season and controlled long stretches of Tuesday's match, with Jade Kovacevic and Kaylee Kearns narrowly missing scoring chances. In other playoff action, Georgetown's senior girls lost 3-1 to OakvilleTrafalgar Thursday in the AAAA quarterfinals, with Erika Hack scoring the lone Rebel goal. Christ the King's senior boys were edged 1-0 by Holy Trinity in the AAAA semifinals Thursday in Oakville. With the win, the 11-0-0 'Dogs move into top spot in the OLA's East Conference standings over the 10-0-0 Green Gaels of Clarington, who defeated Halton Hills in last year's East final. Those two teams will meet for their lone regular season contest June 10 in Bowmanville. Rookie Tyler Ferreira of Brampton was named first star Tuesday, netting the third-period equalizer and winner, finishing with a hat trick. For the first time this season, the Bulldogs trailed in the third period before taking control of the game. Kody Lyons (2), Jordan Dance, Michael Licata and team leading scorer Shane Scott also had goals, with Dustin Hanzelka earning the win in goal, making 28 stops. The visitors fired 46 shots on Beaches' netminder Ian Duffy. The Bulldogs swept a home-andaway series with the Mississauga Tomahawks last weekend by scores of 12-3 and 9-3, while also running past host Mimico 9-6.
