32 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 27, 2010 Countdown to 1st Annual Big DADDY 22 DAYS TO GO Big Daddy Festival is a fun day for all!! by Lois Fraser Remember when kids used to brag that "My Dad can beat up your Dad"? My husband Al's Dad was 43 when he was born, so Al used to reply "Oh Yeah? Well my Dad can beat up your Grandfather!" The days of strength being the measure of a great Dad are over. Today's Dad is measured by how much time he spends interacting with his kids, the example he sets and how well he communicates with the family. Of course, males still enjoy feats of strength, so the Big DADDY Festival, is planning an arm wrestling challenge. This will take place in Downtown Georgetown on Father's Day, June 20th. Wrestle your kids, or other Dads. Very strong Mothers can sneak in for a test of strength as well. Another definition of a great Dad (if you are under twelve) is your willingness to go crazy and be a bit "out there". After twelve, they just want you to disappear, say nothing and above all else don't embarrass them! So, if your kids enjoy seeing you on the wild side, come and join our Giant Twister game on Main St. If you live to embarrass your teenager, bring your camera! And for the real extrovert, or if your kids can talk you into anything, join our DADDY Long Legs competition, where good natured Dads will walk the runway to loud, suggestive music and show off their legs. There are several categories of winners, including; hairiest legs, best calf muscles, skinniest legs, sexiest walk...you get the picture. Ideas for new categories will be entertained, so think about it. This contest will pit Dads against each other, but it's all in fun. Although pant rolling is encouraged, wear your shorts and you could increase your chances to get nominated by the crowd to play! And for the Dad who never wants to grow up, there's a DADDY Road Hockey tournament going on just outside Knox Church in Downtown Georgetown. This section of road is open to play the whole day and there are 4 sets of games taking place. Kids and Dads are welcome to play. Just show up and join in the fun! Lots of fun activities are scheduled for the Gallery at the Cultural Centre (the library/theatre, 9 Church St.) throughout Father's Day. Local retailer, Shelly's Chocolates, will be helping kids make chocolates with their Dads. There will be paper airplane making activity, a "Dads and Newborns" discussion with Public Health nurses and a "Daddy's Little Girl" nail painting adventure, led by a professional nail expert. Yes, DADDY is going to do the nail painting. Let's see how steady his hand is! Yes, we know that Dad's your real hero, but......Ken Lake, of Orange Crate Designs, has made Giant Superhero designs for kids and Dad's to colour together, plus there are card making activities for kids to show Dad how much they are loved... or how much they like colouring...or both! This is an all day activity, so come any time. Early bird Dads can take in the 23rd annual Classics Against Cancer Car show at Cedarvale Park, with over 260 classic cars from 1980 and older on display. The Park opens at 7:30 am so come early! Following that, take a walk up to the festival on Main St. There's plenty to do in Downtown Georgetown during the Big DADDY Festival. Not only are the stores open from 10 until 5, but there is a long list of entertainment happening at the Chill Zone Stage (located at the Main St. parking lot beside Yong's Restaurant). Continuous entertainment, from noon until 4pm includes: The Playford Players, featuring guitar and dulcimer (okay, what the heck is a dulcimer?), local folk duo Ablett and Cooper, Brown Ale (specializing in Celtic and East Coast music) and Lewin and Gittings (piano, guitar and vocal duo). McMaster's Meat and Deli will be serving up pulled pork and Steam Whistle beer brisket sandwiches, while you enjoy the music. Sidewalk sales and in-store events will take place from 10 to 5. While you shop, listen to Dixie Land Jazz, as the Sandy Stompers Dixie Land Band plays from 12 to 4 pm. There's a rock climbing wall and children's activities, such as sidewalk chalk art and hoola hoops, are there are all to enjoy. There are over 50 Dad related activities in the Big DADDY Festival. Come and spend the day (or the whole weekend) with your Dad, or the man in your life who feels like a Dad to you. More news about Saturday's activities on www. downtowngeorgetown.com.
