ALS walk set for June 5 By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Hundreds of local residents will be lacing up their walking shoes Saturday, June 5 for the second-annual Acton/ Georgetown Walk for ALS. The 5 km Walk will be held at Georgetown's Gellert Centre at 11 a.m. ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a paralyzing affliction that leaves sufferers unable to move, speak and eventually breathe. It kills two to three Canadians a day, and devastates more than 1,000 Ontario families physically, emotionally and financially. Last year's inaugural walk in Georgetown was the largest Walk for ALS in its 10-year history. An estimated 1,500 residents came out for the walk, with hundreds more supporting the cause with donations and sponsorships. Walk participants walk for those who can't, like Dr. Jeff Sutherland of Georgetown, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2008 at the age of 41. "ALS has certainly become a common word in our home," says Sutherland's wife Darlene. "We continue to make adjustments to the changes in Jeff's abilities and make sure that we spend as much time together as possible, both as a couple and as a family." The couple's three sons-- Zach, Ben and Nathaniel-- have adapted to their dad's physical limitations, and though they are saddened that some of the activities they enjoyed doing together such as snowboarding and golf, are now beyond his capabilities, they remain supportive and understanding. "We've been so fortunate to be surrounded by such supportive family and friends and an incredible community," said Darlene. Sutherland said while it saddens him to lose his independence as a result of the disease, he tries to focus on what he can still do. "ALS has taken enough of what I can't control, but I won't let it take away my happiness or my enjoyment of life. We enjoy each day and face each challenge as it presents itself. We don't want this disease to have the power of destroying the memories we create in the present." This year's walk will help increase awareness of the disease, raise money for equipment and support services for those living with ALS and garner funds towards research to find a cure. ALS is a fatal and rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease affecting more than 1,000 Ontario residents. There is no cure or effective treatment, and 80 per cent of those affected die within two to five years of diagnosis.
