6 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, May 27, 2010 OPINION Looking for answers Here are a few questions with no good answers. How is it a 12 year-old boy in Toronto is nabbed carrying a loaded handgun? Why can we put a man on the moon and bring him back but we can't plug an oil leak in the water? What is the benefit of holding the G20 summit in the middle of a metropolitan city (Toronto)? What is the benefit of holding the G8 summit for one day in Haliburton? How did Sarah Ferguson go from being a member of the Royal Family to being a desperate, chain-smoking, money-grubber apparently willing to shill for anyone with a chequebook? How does a supposed man of God-- a Yemeni Muslim cleric-- justify calling for the killing of American civilians? How is it there are so many contraband cigarettes-- by some estimates nearly 50 per cent-- smoked in Ontario? How does Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff plan to improve his image-- which has him ranked dead last among party leaders in likeability-- before the next election? Why has Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his party opened the door, even a little bit, to letting abortion once again become a hot-button topic? How do we go from having no summer last year to having summer in May this year? Why did it take the NHL so long to finally accept a European-trained referee into its officials' fold-- Swede Marcus Vinnerborg will begin work next season-- when European players have been the norm since the 1970s? Why is it so hard for a group of pro-cycling activists to accept the fact that former Ontario attorney general Michael Bryant was not at fault for the death of courier Darcy Allan Sheppard, a man who obviously had multiple problems, a history of assault and was the author of his own death? 905-873-0301 Publisher: Ken Nugent General manager: Steve Foreman (sforeman@independentfreepress.com) Retail advertising manager: Cindi Campbell (ccampbell@independentfreepress.com) Managing editor: John McGhie (jmcghie@independentfreepress.com) Distribution manager: Nancy Geissler (ngeissler@independentfreepress.com) Classifieds Kristie Pells (classified@independentfreepress.com) Accounting Rose Marie Gauthier Editorial Cynthia Gamble: News editor (cgamble@independentfreepress.com) Ted Brown: Photography (tbrown@independentfreepress.com) Lisa Tallyn: Staff writer (ltallyn@independentfreepress.com) Eamonn Maher: Staff writer/sports (emaher@independentfreepress.com) WEB POLL RESULTS Which of the four remaining teams will win the Stanley Cup? · Chicago Blackhawks (49%) · Montreal Canadiens (28%) · Philadelphia Flyers (20%) Steve Nease actions of the traditional politiMP Chong urged to the cal parties. John Northey, Georgetown take expense stand Verses on MPs' purses Dear editor, I would like to know where Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong stands on the expenses issue. Right now all four parties in Parliament have agreed on just one thing-- to hide from the auditor general what their expenses are. This is completely unacceptable, especially from the Conservatives who ran on `cleaning up' corruption. If there is nothing to hide, then Mr. Chong should push for expenses to be made public and put his expenses on his website ASAP so anyone in our riding can see them. If there is nothing to hide, great-- I'd have more respect for Mr. Chong. If he refuses to show or fight to make them public for all MPs then I would have to wonder just what is in those expenses. Since this involves federal politics I will point out that I am the current president of the Green Party EDA for Wellington-Halton Hills as that could bias my viewpoint on Dear editor, Strangely on the news today, Miss Frazer couldn't get her way. Requests she made to our MP's To audit their expenses please! The answer then was loud and clear, Check our spending? No damn fear! Check our clothes and check our hats Check our this and check our that, But keep your nose out of our affairs, and do your thing with other players. If we can make some extra dough who are you to tell us NO? We don't know how long, we'll be here, Some will be out on their ear. we'll make hay while we are able, governments are not that stable. We'll be truly sure dejected If those others get elected. You can audit those all you want, but audit us? No you shant.
