In addition to celebrating the arrival of their son Calum, parents Erin and Paul Bryan were thrilled to be the first midwife-assisted birth at Georgetown Hospital (GH), a service they have been advocating for in their community for some time. As of April 1, families who choose to deliver their babies by a midwife have been able to do so at Georgetown Hospital. "We have welcomed six midwives from the Midwifery Care of Peel and Halton Hills to the healthcare team in our Obstetrical Department," said Cindy McDonell, the hospital's Chief Operating Officer and Program Leader of the Georgetown Family Practice. "These midwives were granted privileges to GH and will be working very closely with our two obstetricians, as well as with our family physicians." "The addition of midwives will definitely help strengthen and expand our existing obstetrical program at Georgetown Hospital," added Dr. Selvaratnam Gunaratnam, GH obstetrician and gynaecologist. "I look forward to working with them to provide the best obstetrical care possible to our community." "We are very pleased to be able to round out our services and provide our families with choices in their birthing experience," added McDonell. "Midwives have been successfully practising in Halton Hills for 20 years and having them join our multi-disciplinary healthcare team at GH is great for our community-- especially the women of Halton Hills and their families." "In the past, Halton Hills women who chose midwifery had to leave their home communities to deliver their babies in other hospitals. Now that midwives are allowed to deliver at GH, these women can conveniently have their babies here closer to home," explained midwife Cathy Bulstrode, "We are just thrilled to be able to join the Hospital and look forward to working with the obstetrical healthcare team at GH." "A midwife is a primary caregiver, who provides all the care necessary for a healthy woman and her baby throughout her pregnancy, birth and for six weeks afterward. We see women for all prenatal visits and give prenatal education," explained midwife Shirley Meltzer. "We can also order laboratory and ultrasound testing and give some medications during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum (after birth) period. If the care of either mom or baby becomes complicated, we refer women and babies to family doctors or specialist doctors like obstetricians and paediatricians at GH."
