8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 10, 2010 Risk Watch Blitz set for June 15-16 About 900 elementary students will take over the Gellert Centre next Tuesday and Wednesday (June 15 and 16) for a two-day Risk Watch Safety Blitz. Grade 4 students from Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board schools in Acton and Georgetown will be at the centre from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. The Risk Watch Safety Blitz promotes the prevention of injury through various activities to youths. Risk Watch, an injury prevention program for children pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8, was developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and endorsed by the Fire Marshals' Public Fire Safety Council. In Canada, injuries are the leading cause of death for children over a year old. The two-day blitz will feature interactive activities, including a helmetfitting inspection clinic, bicycle safety, water safety, school bus safety, fire prevention and first aid. Information will also be provided on farm equipment, ATVs and safe boating. For the first time, CN Police will be bringing Obie the Train. Halton Regional Police Service, Halton EMS and OPP will be on hand featuring police and ambulance vehicles. Mascots Sparky, Buckles the Bear, Siren the Saint Bernard will be there along with Little Squirt. Captain David Ford of Halton Hills Fire Department said Risk Watch is an educational initiative with age appropriate curriculum that has been developed for all elementary school grades. "The tireless efforts and dedication of the Coalition Members is what makes the Risk Watch program the continued success it has been for the past 11 years," said Ford. Ford is proud that Halton Hills recently received confirmation it has received the "Risk Watch Safe Community" designation for the fourth straight year from the National Fire Protection Association. "This is an excellent opportunity to forward some key information to a lot of young people at one time," said Ford. "If even one injury is prevented by making the right choice, then our efforts have been rewarded." The students will be bused to the Gellert Centre courtesy of Tyler Transport, Denny's Bus Line, First Student Canada and Stock Bus Lines. The Safety Blitz is organized by Risk Watch coalition members made up of Catholic, public and Christian school teachers, community health nurses, EMS, Halton Police, Halton Hills Fire Department, Town of Halton Hills Recreation & Parks Department and Ray Johnson & Associates of Co-operators Insurance.
