10 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, June 10, 2010 ATHLETES of the week Acton High School Christ the King G.D.H.S Chris Chiasson Tim Thompson Khalil Smith Tyler Renton Demi Swann Emily Driedger Acton High School Athletes of the Week are Chris Chiasson and Tim Thompson. Chiasson, a defensive tackle on the Halton Hills Crimson Tide football team, was chosen for his sacks, blocks and tackles in a 16-0 win over Brampton Bulldogs. Thompson, a member of the Bearcats' track team, was selected for his fourth-place result at GHAC in the 100m hurdles, finishing second in his heat. Georgetown District High School athletes of the week are Emily Driedger and Demi Swann. Grade 12 student Driedger the provincial championships by placing sixth in the senior girls' 800m in 2:15.91 and seventh in the 1,500m in 4:42.92. She also was a triple winner at the Golden Horseshoe qualifier, finishing first in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m events. Swann, a Grade 9 student, won the GHAC midget girls' triple jump and was a member of the second-place-finishing GDHS 4x100m relay team at the same meet. At the South Region OFSAA qualifier in St. Catharines, Swann narrowly missed making the trip to London last weekend for the midget girls' triple jump by just five centimetres, taking fifth. Christ the King Catholic High School Athletes of the Week are Tyler Renton and Khalil Smith. Renton, a member of the Jaguars' track and field team, was cited for bringing home triple gold in the javelin, shot putt and discus from GHAC, followed by a first in the javelin and second in the shot put at the South Regionals. The Grade 10 student capped off the year with a gold medal in the javelin at the OFSAA meet in London, Smith, also a member of the Jags' track team, was selected for his win in the midget boys' triple jump at GHAC and second-place showing at the South Regionals. Smith qualified for OFSAA and was 20th in the triple jump in London last weekend. What do you see? It's poetry! McKenzie-Smith Bennett Grade 7 students enjoyed a unique wrapup to their poetry unit as they attended a poetry cafe in teacher Deb Gross' room. The students recited their poems, and were also served refreshments and snacks, all donated by several local businesses in Acton. Grade 7 student Chantal De Rabbie presented her two poems as students sat back and enjoyed the ambiance. The purpose of the month is to raise public awareness of the benefits and values of recreation. The month's theme, `Live it Everyday', encourages people to participate in Recreation and Parks programs, services and facilities everyday. It's an opportunity for municipalities, schools, businesses, community clubs, individuals, and others to get out there and celebrate what Ontario and its communities have to offer.
