Dave Urion of Meadowlark Drive in Georgetown South is the first on his street to wear his heart on his sleeve... or perhaps more accurately, on his garage door. Urion has painted the flag of England, St George's Cross, on his garage door, so all the neighbours on his street can see his allegiance. "I painted it while my wife was at work," explained Urion. "As soon as I put the first couple of brush strokes on, I realized it was going to be a big job-- it took several coats (of paint) to cover. "And my wife thought I was joking when I said I was painting the door," added Urion. "She didn't believe me when I said I'd done it. She's from Scotland, so I had to promise I'll paint the Scottish flag THURSDAY, June 10, 2010 World Cup fever grips neighbourhood on something. I'm thinking of (painting it on) one of the kitchen cupboard doors." The flag, a red cross on a white background, is representative of Urion's homeland, England. He moved to Canada at age eight, and played soccer as a kid, but admitted he's more of an avid spectator now. "I knew I was at a point of no return as soon as I started to paint it," laughed Urion. "I had told my neighbours I was going to do it-- I had no choice but to follow up on my threat. Now they have to stare at England's flag as the World Cup is played out." As Urion is the first on the street to throw down the gauntlet, he's not sure what the reaction will be from his neighbours. "Who knows what will happen as the World Cup gets closer," said Urion. "One of my neighbours is Italian, another is Portuguese. I'm the first on the street to paint a flag, so it's their turn. They'll have to work fast." Meanwhile World Cup country flags are flying high on numerous vehicles in the town. Dave Urion of 69 Meadowlark Drive in Georgetown has World Cup fever, even painting England's flag on his garage door. Photo by Ted Brown Will Halton Hills become the byway for a new highway? By TIM FORAN Metroland Media Group A new four-lane highway running from Hwy. 401 in Milton to Hwy. 400 north of Vaughan, cutting through Halton Hills and Peel Region, is one alternative being considered to handle future congestion in the northwest GTA. There are two starting spots in Milton for the new "transportation corridor," according to a report released online recently as part of the Province's GTA West Planning and Environmental Assessment Study. The first Milton option is to start the road west of Regional Road 25 where a realigned Tremaine Road interchange is already planned, said Milton Regional Councillor Colin Best, one of Halton's representatives on an inter-municipal task force reviewing the Province's plans for the GTA West transportation corridor. A second option is to begin the new road at the Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 407 junction east of Trafalgar Road at the border of Peel and Halton regions. If starting from Tremaine, the road would snake northeast, bypassing Georgetown to the south and skirting northwest Brampton before connecting with Hwy. 410 and Hwy. 427 and terminating at Hwy. 400 north of Maple, according to a rough map of the route included in the Provincial report.
