More than 1,000 participants laced up their walking shoes on June 5 and trekked through Georgetown South during the second annual Georgetown/Acton Walk for ALS. Sunny skies greeted the walkers as they followed Jeff Sutherland, a local doctor who was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2008, and his wife, Darlene, on the five-kilometre walk. Afterwards, the participants were treated to hot dogs, pizza, snacks and cold drinks while they listened to music by DJ Salty Dog and other live entertainment. Every month, people come from far and wide to enjoy a delicious all-you-can-eat meal at the Acton Community Brunch. Hungry guests who drop by the Acton Arena and Community Centre are treated to heaping plates full of fresh French toast, pancakes, sausages, toast and fruit. Hosted by the Kinette Club of Acton, the brunch usually runs the last Sunday of the month with proceeds going to the Acton service groups who help cook, serve and tidy up.
