Halton Region's municipally supplied tap water is closely monitored and meets the provincial water quality requirements of the Ministry of the Environment. However, when it comes to private well water, it is the responsibility of well owners to maintain their well and to ensure their well water is safe for drinking. Private well owners are encouraged to test their well water a minimum of three times a year to ensure the continued safety of their drinking water. Halton residents who rely on a private well for their water supply can sign up to receive an e-mail or postcard reminding them to test their well water for bacteria in the spring, summer and fall. There is no cost for this service. Bacteria testing is free and samples can be dropped off at one of the eight well water sample bottle drop-off depots located throughout Halton Region. Depot locations can be found on Halton's website or by calling 905-825-6000 or toll free, 1-866442-5866. Sample bottles can be picked up at any depot location, ordered online at www.halton.ca/health or by dialing 311. Well water samples are sent to the Pub- Gary Carr lic Health Laboratory in Hamilton to test for E. coli and total coliform bacteria. Test results are available within four to five business days by phone when you provide the PIN number found on the sample bottle.
