ANDREW DEBRECENI on sixteen-mile creek: After spotting a busy beaver family in Oakville, the Debreceni family put their photographs of the parent and her kitten on their Christmas cards this year. The animals were photographed on the Heritage Trail of 16 Mile Creek just south of Dundas Street. Beavers have been spotted along the creek throughout this winter. Felled trees and teeth marks are evidence of their work in the creek area near Speers Road and Cross Avenue. The efficient creatures are known to cut down trees and build dams on rivers and streams using timber, mud and stones. The dams protect them against predators. Beavers also build lodges in the ponds created by their dams. The lodges, which have underwater entrances, are sturdy enough that predators cannot penetrate them. After seeing photos and a story about the beavers' work in The Oakville Beaver, the Debrecenis contacted their community newspaper to offer their photos.
