Playing guitar was perfect for the musician, who admits to having been shy once. "For me, music was my voice," he said. "I was shy when I was younger. I didn't like to talk too much. Guitar and music was my voice. It took me many, many years to get comfortable with even having to talk on the microphone in between songs." But several years ago, he took some vocal lessons and he intends to have some singing on his next album. His most recent album, this one under the alias of Sevara, features several tracks with his own vocals along with a local singer, Ayrin Mackie. Linstead said he released a CD using a different name to allow him to expand his musical creativity into different genres without alienating his existing fans -- the music on that CD is influenced more by Indian tunes. When it came to putting vocals on an album, Linstead admits he was initially hesitant to sing. "I was very critical about (singing). I wanted to make sure I sound like a singer and not like a guitar player trying to sing," he said. However, Linstead says he's heard positive feedback, so far, about his singing. He admits, writing music is quite easy for him, he just has to get in the right mood. "If I want something that's dramatic or if I want something that's danceable, something up-tempo or something that's more of a ballad, I try to get into that emotion. It doesn't take too much effort. The music always just seems to come," he said. The local concert will feature a band along with guest artists, a percussionist and a flamenco dancer. "Having a dancer just adds another dimension or another colour to the stage show. It just accentuates the energy and the vibe we're trying to create," he said. Aside from the Oakville show, Linstead will also perform in Toronto at a pair of concerts. He will perform the two Valentine Fiesta Romantica concerts in Toronto on Feb. 8 and 10 along with Gypsy flamenco guitarist Antonitas D'Havila.
