Police were called to help QEP set to open Continued from page 1 3 · Friday, January 20, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com cannot be certain it was the same coyote." While this was the first reported attack on a human, northwest Oakville has seen a series of coyote attacks on dogs this month. Two weeks ago, a coyote killed a Saddler Circle woman's small dog after the dog escaped into a wooded area. On Jan. 11, a second dog was attacked while being walked by its owner north of Upper Middle Road, near Grand Oak Trail. On Monday, another dog was attacked as it walked with its owner along a ravine in West Oak Trails Park. While all attacks happened in the same general area, it is impossible to say at this time if this coyote was responsible. "This particular coyote exhibited very unusual behavior and we will be continuing to patrol that area as we have been doing because our concern has always been the safety of people and pets," said Brenda Dushko, Oakville & Milton Humane Society. "Anytime a coyote bites a person that is unusual behavior." Dushko said the body of the coyote will be sent off for analysis. ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER Public threat: A dead coyote is removed from a ravine area in West Oak Trails. Police were called to assist animal control after a report that an eight-year-old girl was allegedly bitten and followed home by the coyote. It's been a long-time coming, but the wait is nearly over as the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre prepares to open after extensive reconstruction. The centre will officially open in March with full programing, including March Break camps. As of this month, however, a handful of nonprofit arts groups have already moved into the nearly-completed facility and are even using it for rehearsals. More groups will continue to move in as the year progresses. "It's kind of a staggered opening because some of the groups have had commitments with their current places. Some of them will be starting in September, some of them will be moving in (this) spring," said Nina de Vaal, the Town of Oakville's director of Recreation and Culture. In 2009, Town council approved the renovation of the former Queen Elizabeth Park High School, at 2302 Bridge Rd., in southwest Oakville. The renovation aimed to build a community centre to meet the recreational needs of Oakville, and provide a home to the many non-profit arts and cultural groups in town. The centre is meant to be a cultural hub and a home for the arts groups. "A lot of these groups have not had a home before so they have been in homes or basements," de Vaal said. "Some of them have rented space in other facilities, like churches, but these spaces are not designed for the actual function of the clubs. We have actual rehearsal rooms for music, whether it's one-on-one music -- like a teacher and participant -- or larger groups. We have a rehearsal hall for even larger groups." The new QE Park features the culture rooms that have been asked for by local arts groups as well as recreation facilities including gymnasiums, sports fields, a swimming pool and more. There will also be a new youth centre and a seniors' centre. De Vaal said there are various room-use rates and discounts to member groups. "The recreation facilities in the building are open to anybody. The arts and culture facilities are also open to anybody, but if you want the reduced rate then you have to be a member," de Vaal said. She noted the membership fee is reasonable. For information, visit www. oakville.ca/qepark.htm. DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN means...
