HILLSVIEW-NEWS FROM THE SENIORS CENTRES Acton Seniors Centre By JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Almost 100 members and guests enjoyed the 15th Anniversary dinner. Mayor Rick Bonnette brought greetings from the Town and said it was nice to see many of the founding members including Gerald Rennie, Marj McDonough and Owen Coultrup. The mayor presented volunteer awards to Marj McDonough, Anna Arnold, Pat Frizzell, Dobbie Frizzell. Marion Storey and Betty Green were unable to attend that evening. The mayor was accompanied by Councillors Jon Hurst, Michael O'Leary and Dave Kentner. We enjoyed American-style cuisine- hamburgers, hot dogs and baked potatoes, followed by apple pie or apple blossoms and ice cream. The entertainment was excellent, and the door prizes were gift vouchers for local stores and flowers. Jill Tetreault won the 50/50. Brightly-coloured gerbera flowers decorated the tables and we enjoyed using our lovely new chairs (thanks to our New Horizons grant). Some of the programs are taking a break for the summer, but we still have several interesting day trips. On Tuesday, July 13 there is a trip to the Orillia Opera House to see Married Alive, a comedy, followed by a cruise on Lake Couchiching. There will be a barbecue lunch on board. What a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon. On August 18 there is a different kind of trip. You will be touring the Waterloo area, and have appetizers at the Waterlot Restaurant and Inn in New Hamburg, back on the bus to the Kennedy Tavern in St. Agatha, and finally off to Dundee to have a lovely treat at the Emporium. What an interesting way of seeing some of the lovely smaller towns in Ontario. The 50/50 was won at last and Wendy Muir is now $217 richer. I understand Jack said, he would be lucky to get what comes after the decimal point. 23 Independent & Free Press, Thursday, July 8, 2010 In Brief Georgetown Seniors Centre euchre: (euchre 1st and third Tuesday; bid euchre second and fourth Tuesday), 7 p.m. at the centre on Guelph St. Admission $2. They will be much easier to stack. Have you noticed the new awning over the entrance? We are looking for the folding doors to arrive and put in place. This will block some of the sound coming from and going into the auditorium. On Wednesday, July 7 we travelled into Toronto, after having lunch at the Mandarin, to see "Jersey Boys". This show is coming to an end in late August. They have had over a million visitors, many for the second and third time. This is the last call for anyone interested in the Zoo Trip. I have just been told that the Zoo has one of the largest splash pads and have just added a merry-go-round. Things are quiet at the Centre but keep in mind all dropin programs are still a go. Also keep in mind that it is air conditioned. By FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre This has surely been a HOT week. I hope you all drank lots of water and took it easy. Personally I loved every bit of it. Wish somebody could figure out a way to bottle it for next winter. Being a "Royalist" I spent most of my weekend watching the queen at various events in and around Toronto. A great improvement over the events of the weekend of June 26. Several ladies from the Centre travelled to Toronto to see the Andre Rieu concert on Saturday, June 26. While they were en route the concert was cancelled because of the danger from the protesters. I can't figure out why it wasn't cancelled weeks ago. The Day Trippers had a wonderful trip to Port Dover. The meal was delicious and the play, "Looking", was so hilarious my stomach ached from laughing. I bet many of you have heard and wished you had come with us.
