10 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,August 3, 2010 ADHS students awarded grants Two Acton District High students were recently awarded grants by the Halton Region's Summer Company Program. Hasan Rajabali, Grade 12, and Jon van Oosten, Grade 11, both qualified for more than $1,400 each to help them start their own summer businesses. The Summer Company Program is designed to encourage entrepreneurship in Halton youths. Working with mentors from the Halton Region Business Development program and local businesses, Rajabali and van Oosten are putting their education and skills to work. Using skills and knowledge from his Technology and Business courses, Rajabali's business, Woody Woodworks Carpentry, offers custom carpentry work. Based from his home in Rockwood, he will be doing onsite work for both homeowners and businesses. Through his company, JVArchitecture, van Oosten is applying his computer design skills by doing 3D renderings of architectural plans for real estate agents, contractors and homeowners. "Winning the award feels amazing,"said Rajabali. "The grant allows me to get the tools and materials I need to start." By helping students and young people cover their startup costs, the Summer Company Program hopes to encourage more small business development in Halton Region.
