8 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, August 12, 2010 Local cancer patient to take part in North York's Underwear Affair By LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Local resident Steven Hawes will be among the hundreds of men and women who will hit the streets the evening of Aug. 28 to uncover cures for cancers below the waist. Hawes, who has colon cancer, will be taking part in the North York General Hospital's The Underwear Affair presented by Mark's Work Wearhouse. The event is a 10K run or 5K walk in Toronto with proceeds going to the hospital in support of research into cancers such as prostate, colo-rectal, ovarian, bladder, cervical and testicular-- all cancers covered by underwear. Participants will dress down and hit the streets clad in costumes, underwear or even exercise gear. Prizes for the most creative costume will be awarded at the EXPOsed after-party. Cancers that occur below the waist are often deemed taboo and therefore don't receive the level of awareness or funding they need. Due to the location of the cancers, regular screening is often avoided even though it's a key element to early detection and prevention. Hawes, who is currently having chemotherapy every two weeks because his cancer has metastasized to his lungs, said he's planning on doing the 5K walk as it "will be on the end of a good week," just before he begins chemo again. The team he's on with family and friends is called SemiColon, and includes Sarah Walker and Peter Scott, both also of Georgetown.
