Starting on Sunday ENTERTAINMENT Globe offers musical theatre workshops for youths By LOIS FRASER Georgetown Globe Productions Globe Productions Youth Company is holding a series of Musical Theatre workshops for youth, aged 8 to 14. The fall session is focused on education and preparation for musical theatre shows. The winter session consists of 12 rehearsals to put on a show. All sessions will be held at St. John's United Church, 11 Guelph St. on Sunday afternoons. The fall session is nine weeks (Sept. 19 to Nov. 21). Led by seasoned Globe professionals, topics will include: comedy and improvisation, music theatre dance skills, vocal technique, dramatic skills, costumes and props, how to audition, a showcase performance and a field trip to the John Elliott Theatre to see Globe's fall production of Into the Woods. Participants will meet the cast after the show and have a discussion with the directors about the production. The winter series is 12 weeks (Jan 9 to April 3) and is focused exclusively on preparing the Youth Cabaret 2011 production. All attendees will be part of the show, which will include the performance of various musical theatre song and dance numbers as well as dramatic and comedic readings. During last year's session the kids were taught the song and choreography to Jellicle Cats, from the musical Cats by a voice coach and original Cats cast member, Lorena McKenzie, who is playing at Stratford this summer. Globe's Youth Company is also presenting the Dr. Seuss musical Seussical in March 2011. Workshop participants will gain skills to audition for Seussical and at the same time, have fun putting on their own show. The story is about a land called Harminoeva and how its villainous ruler, Prince Gamelan (pictured above at right, played by Josh Ivanyshyn) outlaws the performing arts throughout the kingdom.
