Globe gets armoury for $2 By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer The old Georgetown Armoury building, located inside the gates at the Fairgrounds, will now be a part of show business. Halton Hills council unanimously approved a deal at a recent meeting that would see the building, which was in jeopardy of being demolished last year, sold for $2 to the Georgetown Globe Musical Productions. After the vote, Globe members in attendance sung Thanks for the Armoury in tune to Bob Hope's signature ditty Thanks for the Memories. The agreement sees Globe buy and restore the 143-year-old building and lease the land it sits on from the Town. The land would be leased to Globe for 20 years at $2/year and then automatically renewed thereafter for fiveyear terms. The Town will also transfer the remaining $29,350 in an account set aside for demolition-- some were used for emergency repairs and to pay the Town solicitor for work on this agreement-- to Globe for its restoration efforts. Globe president Lois Fraser said the company's members are "beyond excited" about having a permanent home. While over the years, the group has put about $170,000 aside for a new venue (it currently rehearses in St. Paul's parish hall and St. John's United Church), it has already spend $200,000 so far on the armoury's restoration. That includes a whole new support structure and a new steel roof, "so the building will last for a very, very long time," said Fraser. "We kicked out a couple of raccoons, but, apart from that, we haven't had anything but total support from the community, and we're very grateful," she added. "Globe has shown leadership to come forward and take on this project. Everyone feels great that the building could be saved," said Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal. Other plans for the building include exterior wall upgrades, insulation, drywall, windows, electrical rewiring, energy-efficient heating, new stairs to the second floor and a barrier-free washroom. Globe intends to incorporate a number of environmentally-friendly features into this restoration, including low-flush toilets and energy-efficient hot water equipment. The group also plans to build an outdoor performance space, outdoor gazebo and tourism booth. --With files from Lisa Tallyn, staff writer 7 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, September 21, 2010 $ 8,000 0 % 1 UP TO IN FACTORY REDUCTIONS.
