www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, January 26, 2012 · 18 Black Ops pull together for their teammate By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Tragedy can tear people apart, but it also has the power to bring them together. The Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) team `Black Ops' and Scotiabank pulled together, last week, to support Thomas, Joshua and James Newman who were orphaned Thursday, Jan. 12, when their mother Katherine, 43, was murdered in her Treetop Terrace residence. Their father, Kyle, 43, was shot and killed "This is all we can do, right? We can't fix what happened, but we can do something." Cathy McCrory, manager, Black Ops during an altercation with Halton police the same day. Halton police have yet to officially link the two incidents, but said they are pursuing that possibility. In the wake of the tragedy, the Black Ops team decided to donate $500, given to the team by Scotiabank's minor hockey sponsorship program, to the Newman brothers' trust fund. Black Ops Manager Cathy McCrory said it was important to the Black Ops to do something because Joshua Newman, 10, is a member of their team. "This is all we can do, right?" said McCrory. "We can't fix what happened, but we can do something." McCrory said the team applied for the sponsorship last year, but did not receive word that the cheque was available for pickup until after the sad events of Jan. 12. Eager to support their team member and his brothers, McCrory said, the parents of the Black Ops players agreed to donate the money to the Newman boys' trust fund. Parents also made donations to the trust fund on their own.
