Hayward, 50, easily won the Ontario and Canadian senior women's titles this summer in her first year of eligibility in that age category after taking 2009 off from competitive play. She placed second out of 132 golfers through 36 holes of stroke play at +1, just one shot behind the winner. After cruising through the first four rounds MARY ANN of match HAYWARD play, Hayward faced sixth-seeded Mina Hardin of Fort Worth, Texas in the semis and was 2 up following nine holes of play. Hardin birdied the 17th hole to take a 1-up lead heading into the par-5 18th. Hayward then carded her fourth birdie of the day to put the onus on Hardin to avoid going to extra holes, with the latter sinking a seven-footer for par to claim the match and then the championship. In 2005, Hayward became the first non-American to ever win the USGA's Women's MidAmateur with a 1-up victory in the final held in Richmond, Texas. The 11-3-0 Raiders fell behind 2-0 in Newmarket Thursday and didn't recover, as the 13-3-0 Hurricanes skated to a 6-2 victory. Host Huntsville got a 2-0 early jump on Georgetown Friday before the Raiders found their stride over the final 40 minutes and registered a 7-2 win. While coach Greg Walters' squad has yet to lose at home in six starts this season, the Brampton Capitals opened the scoring here Saturday and the teams were tied at four midway through the final period until sniper Justin Basso potted a power-play marker for the clincher-- his league-leading 18th of the campaign-- in a 6-4 Raider triumph. "We're trying to get to the bottom of (starting slowly), but on the weekend it was more about running into hot goaltending. Against Newmarket, we just couldn't get anything going," said Walters. "One thing we're a little concered about is getting our kids used to playing in tight games, because just haven't had many of those. We're still happy with the way we're playing for the most part, there are still some things to work on but you can't complain when you're 11-3 and in first place."
