16 Independent & Free Press,Thursday, November 25, 2010 Local woman a `home hero' More than 40 residents of Georgetown, Milton, Oakville and Mississauga were recognized for their extraordinary efforts as home caregivers recently. These everyday heroes were honoured at an awards celebration at Oakville's Harbour Banquet & Conference Centre. Hosted by the Mississauga Halton Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), the "Heroes in the Home" Caregiver Recognition Awards pay tribute to individuals for their selfless contributions as caregivers, enabling others who are limited by age, illness and disability to live fulfilling lives in our community. Cathy Shantz, of Georgetown, was one of the award recipients. Shantz cared for her mother for three years after her mother was diagnosed with dementia. Soon after her mother passed away, Shantz assumed the role of caregiver to her father, who has Parkinson's disease. Her dedication to her parents has been demonstrated by her commitment to keep them living at home for as long as possible. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to honour so many people who give their time to help others. We had a great with the response to our Heroes in the Home program this year-- and it was our first program," says Caroline Brereton, CEO, Missis- Cathy Shantz, left, and Carol Fendley received Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Awards from the Mississauga Halton CCAC recently at the Harbour Banquet Centre in Oakville.
