Statue was recognized Continued from page 7 Lockdown was shortlived Palermo Public School in northwest Oakville was placed in a lockdown Wednesday around the lunch hour after a student reported a man tried to grab her in the schoolyard, according to Halton police. However, the report was unfounded. "It did not happen," said Sgt. Dave Cross of the Halton Regional Police Services. The Hold and Secure (lockdown) order was placed on the school around noon. Several police cruisers were at the school property during the lockdown, which was lifted shortly after 1:30 p.m. 13 · Thursday, February 2, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com While not in the best condition, Pogoryelova said the statue was in one piece. After being informed the bronze figure was stolen, the dealer said he had bought it from a private collector in Hamilton for $1,000. This collector eventually made contact with Pogoryelova stating he had purchased the piece in 2001 from some men at a Hamilton flea market who were selling it out of their truck. The collector said he had bought the statue for less than $1,000. "He, of course, didn't have any contact information, any names," said Pogoryelova. "We've called police, but nothing has happened yet. We hope very much police can track this so the people that stole the statue can be found." Pogoryelova said restoration work is planned for the sculpture, which will not be returning to Shevchenko Memorial Park as the future of the land there is unclear.
