Lakeside earns provincial silver Lakeside Volleyball Club teams recently earned provincial bronze and two regional silver medals in Ontario Volleyball Association play. The club's under-17 girls team achieved the all-Ontario bronze -- the best-ever finish for a Lakeside squad -- by upsetting the top two seeds en route to a 4-1 overall record. Lakeside won its first three matches by 2-0 scores before falling to the Durham Attack in the semifinals. Lakeside bounced back to win the bronze-medal game over Ottawa by scores of 24-26, 25-17, 15-11. Local members of the U17 girls team are Rebecca Forbes, Katie Venturi, Leah LoweDavies and Megan Williams. Meanwhile, the club's U15 girls and U14 boys teams added silver medals in the Ontario regional division championships. The girls team defeated Oakville Thunder White, Halton Hurricanes Blue, Etobicoke Titans Black 14U and Halton Hurricanes Blue 15U to reach the final, where Lakeside fell 19-25, 18-25 to the Brantford Tornadeos. Lakeside's U14 boys team swept its roundrobin games against Pakmen, Burlington Blaze and Markham Wasps. The Hornets were part of the recent AHL Outdoor Classic Steeltown Showdown, getting the chance to face a mixed team of boys and girls from Flamborough on the outdoor ice at Hamilton's Ivor Wynne Stadium. Former Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Ric Nattress selected the Hornets to play in the game in reward for the team's recent donation of used hockey equipment to the Hamilton Bulldogs' Skate the Dream program. Nattress is the honourary chairman of the Bulldogs' charity program. Sophie Hamboyan scored the Hornets' lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Flamborough, converting on a penalty shot. Following the game, both teams lined up as a guard of honour for an NHL alumni game and were high-fived by former NHLers Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Curtis Joseph, Derek King, Rick Vaive, Stephane Richer, Guy Carbonneau, Nattress and others. Murray became the 11th president in GAO history at the association's annual general meeting Jan. 28. "We have ambitious plans in 2012 to grow our GAO programs, including expansion of our sport development initiatives to help our high-performance athletes compete at the highest level, while increasing our push at the grassroots level to bring more kids into golf through the Callaway Golf for Kids program," Murray said.
