Town, GLT team up to get Trillium grant By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Halton Hills council has endorsed a partnership with Georgetown Little Theatre for a Trillium grant application. The Trillium Community Capital Fund invites non-profit groups to partner with municipalities on capital projects that promote cultural activities. The CCF will fund up to 50 per cent of the total costs of the project to a maximum contribution of $500,000 and the project must be completed by Dec. 31, 2012. The Town and GLT are targeting their application around improvements to the John Elliott Theatre during the renovation/expansion of the Halton Hills Cultural Centre and Library. Council, at its December meeting, gave pre-2011 budget approval of $223,000 as its supporting portion of the Trillium Community Capital Fund. The Town and GLT are submitting an application totaling $446,000 (the town's share $223,000) and includes: theatre rigging system replacement, $250,000; stage surface replacement, $65,000; theatre seating replacement, $90,000; gallery renewal, $20,000 and theatre change room renovations, $21,000. If the application is unsuccessful these improvements would be reinstated to 20122018 capital forecast. 5 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 Czech vet honoured Bennett Health Care Centre resident Joseph Hynek (left) was honoured Wednesday as Richard Krpac, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Toronto, presented him with the Medal of Merit, 3rd degree, for his service during the Second World War. Hynek, who achieved the rank of Colonel in the Canadian Army, originally served as a Sergeant in the Czech army when war broke out in Europe. The Czechoslovakian army was disbanded, so he immigrated to Canada and enlisted in the Canadian army, hoping to return to liberate his homeland. Instead, he was assigned to train Canadian soldiers to fight in his homeland, and as a result, sent thousands of his `students' to liberate Europe. Hynek will be 96 years old in April.
