14 Independent & Free Press, Tuesday,February 8, 2011 SPORTS & LEISURE Raiders locked in for sixth place By EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer It appears as though the Georgetown Raiders will get another shot at their south Halton rivals in the Ontario Jr. Hockey League post-season. With just one game remaining on the regular schedule, the 31-15-3 Raiders can't move up or down in the standings and will finish sixth in the conference, setting up a likely clash with third-place Oakville in the OJHL quarterfinals. Georgetown has been eliminated from the playoffs the past three years by Oakville and while he wasn't around for those defeats, Raider head coach and general manager Greg Walters is well aware of the history between the clubs. "I probably know their team better than my own," joked the first-year bench boss. "We've scouted them and played them a lot, we know their tendencies and I can tell you that our players will be very prepared for that series." If Friday night's game in Oakville is any indication, the matchup should provide some entertaining hockey. The Blades pulled out a 4-3 win after the teams were tied until late in the third period. A centring pass by the Blades hit the skate of a Georgetown defender and past goalie Michael Nishi for the winning marker with just 1:38 left. Oakville took the season series 4-2-0. Travis Fulton, Mike Charbonneau and Evan Rodrigues scored for the Raiders. The Blades lost 4-3 in a shootout to Hamilton on Saturday to break up their 10game win streak. On Saturday against Stouffville, early goals by Josh Burnell and Justin Basso put the Raiders in front, but they nursed a 2-1 lead until captain Scott Wilson scored shorthanded to seal a 3-1 win, with rookie netminder Michael Stiliadis making several excellent saves. The 17-year-old Kitchener Rangers' prospect improved his record this season to 11-0-0 with the victory as the Raiders were outshot 33-24. "(Stiliadis) is a great young goalie with a lot of potential but Nishi is our number-one guy and we're confident he can do the job in the playoffs," said Walters, shrugging off any goaltending conundrum. Walters said he may sit out some veterans for the team's final home game of the regular season Saturday against the Mississauga Chargers. Former Charger Tyler Walsh was injured Saturday but Walters expects the big winger to be ready for the playoffs. A shot from the point clanks off the goal post behind Georgetown Raiders' goalie Michael Nishi during Friday's Ontario Jr. Hockey League contest at Sixteen Mile Creek Sports Complex. The host Oakville Blades earned a 4-3 victory on a fluky goal late in regulation time. The Raiders rebounded from the stinging defeat to beat the Stouffville 3-1 in Georgetown Saturday night.
